Create & Code: A Maker’s intro to Computer Science

Mondays 3:30 – 4:30 pm.

November 5, 19, 26, December 3, 10, 17

Ages 11 – 14

Part Fab Lab (that’s fabrication lab), part intro to coding with block editor MakeCode, this class is great introduction to computer science and the making ethos.

We’ll be using the micro:bit, a very small computer (called a microcontroller) made by BBC and used in schools throughout the UK, and from Finland to Sri Lanka. This is a physical computing class, meaning we’ll make some cool things (mechanical devices, interactive art, wearable tech) and then create some code to make them work.

Coding the micro:bit is easy with the JavaScript block code editor powered by MakeCode. This gives us immediate and tangible results while learning about CS fundamentals including algorithms, variables, conditionals and iteration. We’ll be drawing from resources created by the BBC in conjunction with the British Council to complement their flagship 21st Century Schools program.

Think of it as computer science for innovators and makers: programming for the physical world by blending hardware design and software design.
